Your entire argument is based on the assumption that people will always want to bring a backpack or bag with other stuff with their netbook, or that they’ll always be wearing clothing with big pockets, or that they’re carrying a large purse. Suppose a person just wants to carry the netbook with them, along with their netbook accessories (power adapter, mouse, cables). A good netbook bag gives them convenient handles and a place to stash the accessories, along with protection for the netbook itself.

By the way, there are also lunch bags for people to pack their lunches in, but you can stick your lunch in your pockets or purse if you prefer.

Also, BTW, I only paid about $15 for the case and for all the places it’s been and the miles I’ve carried it, it was almost as good an investment as the netbook itself.

I have a netbook bag so I can keep my netbook in it, charger, cables I commonly use, a few things I might need for meetings, and yes if it’s an overnight I keep my keys and what not in it. I get the purse jokes all the time, but for me, it works out great. I think it looks like a small laptop case so keep it very near if I’m concerned about something happening to it but I often get people surprised when my netbook comes out of it so I don’t know.

It comes down to personal choice – if you want a netbook bag, get a netbook bag. If you don’t, buy a sleeve and chuck it in your handbag.

The upside of a good netbook bag is that as well as protecting your netbook it gives proper storage for cables, etc. plus room for your handbag stuff.

Actually, I think it’s up to the owner of the netbook to decide what was the point of buying their netbook and not up to you… For me it was weight, not space. And guess what? A 10 inch netbook + bag weights a lot less than a 15 inch laptop + bag.

i don’t have the money to replace a netbook should it get boogered. so i bought a $20 hard-ish case on ebay , it holds my netbook, the ac adapter, an usb hub, a mini travel mouse, an i~pen & a chill pad made for netbooks. it all fits, though i bought the 10.1″ bag for my 8.9″ netbook. i knew i’d want a bit more room, so yeah. it all fits neatly, perfectly. and THAT bag i toss into my backpack. it’s protected nicely, all the accessories are neatly with it. no harm no foul. and if you knew all the crud i have in my backpack? you’d agree a netbag is a good idea. also nice is if i just want to take the netbook? i put the strap back on the case and sling it over my shoulder messenger bag/purse style.
i am one who uses my netbook for everything!! gaming, video’s, pictures, and a whole bunch of other nifty things.
so i heartily disagree with you. in most circumstances unless you’ve got money to throw away? then a netbook bag is a good idea.

While I agree that in the very slim chance she may board an airplane today she should, in fact, put it in a bigger purse……. but in the real world where she will use the netbook everyday, it makes sence to have a way to take the power cord and maybe a wireless mouse along.

I have a Targus netbook case that holds 10″ netbooks. Looks like a mini laptop case. For me it was worth the money. My purse was too small for my
Acer netbook to fit in. Not only do I put my netbook in the case, I also put cords, USB cables especially for my iPod and USB broadband device. The bag comes with a shoulder strap so I carry the netbook hands free while I’m traveling or moving around. There is also a built in strap to keep the netbook in place and not worrying about falling out of the bag when I unzip the bag.

Mike you share my sentiment exactly. A slipcover is the ideal solution. As a matter of fact, I have a hard case + slipcover on mine and that’s how I move around.

I can throw it in any bag without any breakage fears!

I think the netbook bags that only hold a netbook are pointless as many netbooks come with their own sleeves. On the other hand I think netbook backpacks are a fantastic idea. I’m a computer science student and the only computer I have is a netbook (why would I need anything else lol) but I also carry tons of books. It would be nice to have a bag that would carry my netbook (safely without it sliding all over the place or getting crushed by books) and also my books. So a netbook slipcover with a handle…yes, stupid. A netbook backpack with space for books…a college student’s dream come true.

Maybe I’m not your typical woman, but my current purse is not large enough to carry my netbook. Although I do not plan to carry it on a regular basis, I have been on the lookout for a bag that can double as a purse since I would like to have the option of carrying it with me when necessary. These are pitifully hard to find. Almost every one has the look of a computer bag – as if a purse alone isn’t invitation enough for a thief, now you want me to announce that I have several hundred dollars worth of electronics on me as well? What’s wrong with offering something that is both stylish and functional? I would pay good money for that!

I bought a HP Mini 110-1135NR Netbook. I bought a bag, that enables me to carry a optical drive, flip camera, and digital camera, as well as my cords if I need them. The provided slip is fine if you intend on close to home journeys. If going further out or doing more than just net surfing I find it handy to have the bag. I paid $680 for my netbook with memory upgrade, and extended battery, as well as the windows 7 home premium. My netbook is my businss tool, I respect my business, and my data, so a good bag is a required item for me. Don’t be cheap and get a good bag.

I use a Starlight case for my netbook.

Looks very odd when I lug around something that looks like a thick briefcase for such a small computer, but I tend to bike and camp with it, so I find that I need the extra level.

There are two main ways to carry your netbook, chuck it into a backpack, but i would recommend a case to protect it or it will just get scrached to bits like mine.

Netbook bags are not for everyone, some look too small, some look like handbags but there are a few good bags out there.

People generally seem to fall in one of two camps. Some use a netbook simply as a mobile device. They only use it on the move, so they just throw it in a bag or even a large coat pocket. Others treat their netbook like a fully fledged laptop and tend to keep it in a bag with a whole host of accessories.

Why is it a complete waste of money if I happen to need a bag to store my netbook, mouse, headphones, and spare battery? I don’t know what bags you’re talking about, but the ones I’m talking about are just a nice layer of padding around the netbook, with a pouch or two to store things. It’s still a small package to carry around, and I’d rather not carry a backpack with me everywhere when all I need is the netbook and accessories.

My sons (12yo) school have been trialling netbooks at school. As my son has mild intellectual disability and does not understand how easily computers can be damaged, so that’s why I will get him a carry bag for his netbook and power cord. They are priced at ~$700.00 new here in oz, so it pays to take care of it.

I think its a question of protecting your money. Netbooks may be cheap(er) but I’d rather spend a bit more to make sure If I’m going somewhere long distance with it I’ve got space for all the accessories and power adaptor.
If I’m just going down the road yeah I’d use a slipcase.
