Yes, you can get a Dell Inspiron 9 netbook for free. Of course, there's a catch but at least you don't have to fork out money.

In one netbook buying guide that I wrote, I said that netbooks make great gifts as they’re inexpensive yet stylish (compared to laptops) and actually useful. Companies seem to have understood this concept as they’re now using them as promotional items.

Consider this competition by Vodafone UK in which you stand a chance to win a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook which is not a bad mininotebook! I assume that you have to be in the UK of course but rest assured that you will see competitions, offers and other sorts of promotions featuring free netbooks.

“According to Toshiba, the netbook is targeted at schoolchildren, senior citizens, and mobile workers who “do not require the processor power or range of functions of a full-sized laptop”.” - Toshiba Launches Three Mobile Computers

Are netbooks getting the attention of all computer makers or what?

Although I am pretty happy for the shopper about all these new netbooks surfacing, I fear that ultimately, too much choice will become confusing because these mini-laptops seem to have no difference except for the brand name. (What is the Best Netbook Brand? Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, HP, MSI, Samsung?)

Oh well, the fact that the netbook retailers will end up waging a price war to sell them is only good for the consumer right?

Check it out to believe it. The Endeavor Na01 Epson netbook is looking pretty ugly!

At first I had not caught the sarcasm in the headline (Epson Announces Netbook: Middle Managers Do High-Fives) But after reading some more, I was rather amused. Check this out:

“There’s a certain glamour to the netbook. They come in bright, flighty colors and offer the promise of fun, of computing on the go. Nobody ever thinks of slipping a netbook into a briefcase. Its natural home is a purse or a manbag.

But now Epson, the glitz-free printer maker, is in on the game. The Endeavor Na01 might sound like a Star Trek spaceship, but it’s all dull grey plastic, all of the time. Internally it differs not a jot from the standard netbook — 1.6GHz Atom processor, triple USB ports, 10.2 inch screen, 160GB HDD and XP home. You know the rest.”

That’s a good point given that one of the argument in the case for netbooks over laptops is the design aspect of these mini-notebooks.
